Andrew Todd Phillips' Film Biography
In the summer of 1989 Andrew enrolled in the Jerry Allen School of Stunts in Tampa, Florida where he was introduced to a working film set for the first time. 1991 Andrew held duties as a pre-game stagehand for Super Bowl XXV with Whitney Houston and her singing of the National Anthem. The intrigue of the athletic aspects of stunt work drove him to abandon Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado as a sophomore to pursue a life in Hollywood, California.
Then in the summer of 1993, Andrew moved in with his cousin Heath McLaughlin, an Army helicopter fighter pilot turned racecar driving film producer. Together they lived in a small apartment on Victory Boulevard in the heart of California's San Fernando Valley. Andrew's first gig working in Hollywood was as a corpse on the movie Full Eclipse with Mario Van Peebles.
Achieving his Screen Actors Guild (SAG) membership came right away as he held a stunt extra position on the feature film Dragon, The Bruce Lee Story. He continued working on various films with small background roles as a student on Sister Act 2 with Whoopi Goldberg and as a classmate of Mario Lopez on the set of Saved by the Bell. Saquille O' Neal was doing a military MCI commercial and Andrew agreed to shave his head for a spot on the Army squad.
After working as a background actor for a few months on Double Dragon with Scott Wolf, Robert Patrick, and Mark Dacascos, Andrew took the position of Key Set PA Stunt Photo Double Stand-in on the feature film Evolver with Ethan Embry. He managed to squeeze in time for a few guest extra spots on the hit shows Mad About You as a bar patron and NYPD blue as a police officer.
In 1995 Andrew agreed to go on the road as a grip to Moab, Utah with his best friend Billy Gunn and the stars MC Hammer, Bobby Phillips, Gary Hudson, and Director Demitri Logothesis. Gripping on the hit feature film Cheyenne was a major steppingstone as Andrew excelled behind the camera.
Working with Director Ralph Portillo and Actor Corey Haim on location in Wisconsin on Fever Lake turned into many productions with Hemisphere Entertainment. Just Write with Jeremy Piven, Sherilyn Fenn, Wallace Shawn, and Alex Rocco as well as The Last Great Ride starring Ernest Borgnine are films held close to Andrew's heart. Walking Across Egypt starring Ellen Burstyn, Judge Reinhold, Mark Hamill, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Dead Weekend with Steven Baldwin and Dave Rasche remain on Andrew’s "favorites" list.
Landing a spot as a set juicer with the electrical department crew of Sweet Valley High with Brittany Daniel lasted for a couple of seasons. Scott Moody, Steve Galvin, Oscar Rodriguez, Tim Speed, Joe Romeo, and Dexter Enerez were the foundation of the crew. Andrew lived the good life as a set electrician on Fred Dryer's Lands' End set in the desert beaches of Cabo San Lucas, Baja, Mexico. Shooting a feature film with cinematographer Richard Crudo titled East Great Falls turned into the smash mega cult movie American Pie. The blockbuster shows continued; Andrew stepped up to Chief Lighting Technician on the television series The New Mike Hammer with Stacy Keach.
By 1997 Andrew's crew began to join the various unions available to stage employees. IATSE 728 was the choice for a set lighting technician. Andrew accrued his mandatory work permit days on the set of 187 with Samuel L. Jackson working in the flooded Los Angeles concrete river system. Earning a reputation for hard work and creative thinking resulted in more top-level film gigs. He worked with Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise on Minority Report as a pre-rig set lighting technician. He held positions as a juicer on the sets of Ally McBeal's pilot feature, as well as Profiler, Murder One, Pretender, Players with Ice T. He also helped light the sets on Baywatch and Barb Wire with Pamela Anderson. Juicing on Buffy the Vampire Slayer with Sarah Michelle Geller was always fun work as a day player. Buying the Cow starring Alyssa Milano, Jerry O'Connell, Ryan Reynolds, and Bridgette Wilson is a favorite of Andrew’s as he worked alongside famed cinematographer Nancy Schreiber.
It was when Andrew met the "Best in the Business" Michael Cain and Martin Coppen while working on the set of a Paul Hunter music video that the work really started to come in. The crew was double and triple booked all year long. Many highly sought after directors wanted this crew, Dave Myers, Chris Applebaum, Marc Klosfeld, Billy Woodruff, and more booked Andrew for their commercials, videos, and films. Within three years they had shot hundreds of world-class videos for top talent.
Andrew was behind the dimmer board on Lenny Kravitz's blockbuster hit Fly Away. He was backstage rocking out with Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Seal, Sting, Kid Rock, Marilyn Manson, Korn, Puff Daddy, Bone Thugs, Missy Elliot, Usher, Creed, Stone Temple Pilots, Pink, Pink, Buckcherry, Train, Nelly, In Sync, The Moffetts, Blink 182, Cypress Hill, Enrique Inglesias, just to name a few.
Andrew continues working his magic on film sets to this day, most recently lighting Gary Allen's tribute to the PBR with his powerhouse single Get off on the Pain music video. The feature film Cougar Hunting in Aspen and AT&T's Olympic snowboarding commercial starring Gretchen Bleiler remain select favorites. The History channel is currently airing Cowboys and Outlaws, and Call 911 from Tom Jennings Productions is scheduled to televise nationally.
Providing set lighting for Interviews of high profile VIPs has become a specialty for Andrew as CEO's, CFO's, and budding athletes all find themselves under Andrew's lighting. Even Sam Champion, weatherman for Good Morning America has felt the light.
Now 2010 Andrew can be found teamed with Rich Raney from Cero Productions somewhere in the greater Rocky Mountain region of Colorado leading a crew of profitable, ambitious, dedicated filmmakers on the pursuit of artistic perfection.
